Terms of Service

Effective April 2026

These terms govern your use of the Escudo protective DNS service operated by Escudo Security S.A. ("Escudo", "we", "us"). By using the service, you agree to these terms.

1. Service description

Escudo provides protective DNS resolution. When your device queries a domain through our resolvers, we check it against threat intelligence feeds and return either the legitimate DNS response or a block page. We also provide optional features including content filtering, device identification, forensic logging, and breach monitoring.

Escudo is a DNS-layer security tool. It does not inspect, modify, or store the content of your internet traffic. It does not function as a VPN, proxy, or firewall.

2. Acceptable use

You may use Escudo for lawful purposes. You may not:

  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract source code from the service
  • Use the service to facilitate illegal activity
  • Resell access to the service without a written ISP or reseller agreement
  • Attempt to circumvent rate limits, authentication, or access controls
  • Send automated queries designed to map or extract our blocklist data
  • Use the service in a way that degrades performance for other users

3. Service levels

Free tier: Provided on a best-effort basis. No uptime guarantee. We may rate-limit, restrict features, or discontinue the free tier at any time with 30 days notice.

Paid tiers: We target 99.9% monthly uptime for DNS resolution, measured as the percentage of minutes in a calendar month during which at least one resolver responds to queries. If we miss this target in a given month, you may request a pro-rata credit for the affected period. This is your sole remedy for downtime.

ISP deployments: Service levels are governed by your ISP agreement, which supersedes these general terms.

4. Account responsibility

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. If you configure Escudo on a network used by others (family members, employees, guests), you are responsible for informing them that DNS filtering is active.

You must provide a valid email address. We use it for service notifications, security alerts, and billing. We do not send marketing email.

5. Data processing

We process your data as described in our Privacy Policy. DNS query metadata is retained for 30 days and then permanently deleted. We do not sell or share your data with third parties for advertising purposes.

6. Intellectual property

The Escudo service, including its software, threat intelligence data, blocklists, algorithms, and documentation, is the intellectual property of Escudo Security S.A. Your subscription grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the service for its intended purpose.

You retain all rights to your data. We claim no ownership over your DNS query logs or account information.

7. Limitation of liability

Escudo provides DNS-layer security. No security product blocks every threat. We do not guarantee that our service will prevent all malware infections, phishing attacks, or data breaches.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Escudo's total liability for any claim arising from your use of the service is limited to the fees you paid in the 12 months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages.

This limitation does not apply where prohibited by law, including under Brazilian consumer protection regulations (Codigo de Defesa do Consumidor).

8. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify Escudo against claims arising from your misuse of the service or violation of these terms. We agree to indemnify you against claims that the service infringes a third party's intellectual property rights.

9. Termination

By you: You may cancel your account at any time. Paid subscriptions are non-refundable for the current billing period. Your data will be deleted within 30 days of account closure.

By us: We may suspend or terminate your account immediately if you violate these terms. For other reasons (e.g., discontinuation of the service), we will provide at least 30 days notice and a pro-rata refund of any prepaid fees.

10. Governing law

For customers outside Brazil, these terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Panama. Disputes will be resolved by arbitration in Panama City under ICC rules.

For customers in Brazil, these terms are governed by Brazilian law, including the LGPD and Codigo de Defesa do Consumidor. The courts of Sao Paulo, Brazil have exclusive jurisdiction.

11. Changes to these terms

We will notify you of material changes at least 30 days before they take effect, via email and a notice on your dashboard. If you disagree with the changes, you may cancel your account before the effective date. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
